Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s Annual Christmas Cracker Sale lived up to its title with no less than 53 cows and heifers selling over £2000 to a top of 3300gns for Hampshire Farmer Mr Gerald Lambert’s ‘Saddlers Bluey 5th’ by ‘Picston Shottle’ she had calved in November and was giving 30kgs daily. The 7 calved heifers from the ‘Saddlers’ herd averaged £2452.50.

It has been widely reported that the trying weather conditions has dampened spirits within the agricultural community however this was not evident at all throughout Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s November Collective Machinery Sale.

The popular collective fresh milk section of the monthly collective sales at Sedgemoor Auction Centre saw cows and heifers selling to 2200gns.  The top priced cow was ‘Bettiscombe Lucente Kim’ a 2nd calver classified ‘GP84’ and giving 48kgs daily from Roland and Simon Bugler. Their ‘Bettiscombe’ entry achieved the day’s top average at £2145 for their 8 cows and heifers.

Red and White was very much the in demand colour at Greenslade Taylor Hunts’ Annual Autumn Gold Sale at Sedgemoor Auction Centre on Tuesday 23rd October.

The day commenced with the collective milk from leading South West Breeders where a superb Red and White 2nd calver from regular consigners Roland and Simon Bugler, ‘Bettiscombe Shaquille Emerald Red 121st (GP84)’, sold for 2350gns.  Other cows to 2000gns were ‘Bettiscombe Bolivia Nanette’ also from the Buglers, ‘Beneknowle Delovely Amy 35th’ from PJ Andrews and ‘Moorshard Aztec Dee (GP84)’ from RK & SG Miller & Sons.

Tuesday 25th September brought to an end to over 30 years of Dairy Farming for Bowden Farms (PHP & LSW de Pelet Partners) when auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt sold their NMR herd at Sedgemoor Auction Centre. The sale topped at 2000gns twice for two August calved heifers by ‘Wa-Del Hayden’. At 1920gns was the February calved heifer by ‘Refined Labtham’ due again in January to ‘Coldsprings Prentice’

The Sale commenced with the usual fresh milk from leading South West Breeders and as expected it was from this section that the day’s top price came with ‘Holmead Matson Winny’ bred by Terry Cox with six generations of VG and Ex behind her, selling for 2500gns.

Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt were on farm for the second time in a week with the Dispersal of MJ Coles’s Commercial Dairy Herd at Polsham Farm, Wells. Purchasers from Devon to Herefordshire coupled with strong local support produced an excellent trade for fresh milk which topped at 2050gns for the July calved 2nd calver giving 35.0 kgs.

The South of England’s largest Dairy Dispersal of the year saw 480 Organic Non Pedigree Cattle go under the hammer in 6 hours with 81 different successful purchasers from Cornwall to Monmouth and across to Surrey.  The day produced a top price of 2700gns for the 3^rd Calver by Simonoski that had given 8500kgs in her 2^nd lactation.

Regular consigners Roland and Simon Bugler from Dorset topped the day at 2150 gns for ‘Bettiscombe Tennyson Tilly 161st’ a ‘Shottle granddaughter giving 32 kgs having called in May sold to Gloucestershire. A ‘Ricki’  ‘Enid’ ‘Eden’ and ‘Dagmar’ from’ Bettiscombe’ all broke the 2000 gn barrier as did ‘Poynings L Baxter Adelaide’ who was consigned by ‘Ashlea Farm Services, Bristol.

Auctioneer’s Greenslade Taylor Hunt Lady Day Collective Sale at Sedgemoor Auction Centre on Tuesday 20th March witnessed an exceptional demand for well-bred cattle. A March calved ‘Lulu’ heifer consigned by RJ Court from ‘Davlea’ by ‘Deslacs Shaquille’ with 9 generations of EX or VG  dams topped the day at 2750gns to an undisclosed telephone bidder. A ‘Roxy’ from the same herd by ‘Comestar Lyman ET’ sold for 2500gns.

The sustained growth in demand for Red Ruby Devons was reflected in strong bidding at the Devon Cattle Breeders’ Society’s Spring Show & Sale at Sedgemoor Auction Centre, 15^th March.

Buyers came from across the country and were not disappointed in the quality of cattle which was consistently high across the board.  Demand for bulls was particularly strong.  Mr Gavin Hunter’s trip down from Cambridgeshire was rewarded with top price of 4,800 gns for his 2 yr old polled bull Tilbrook Hat Trick; an excellent example of a modern type of Devon bull bought by Mr Wayne Copp of Ilfracombe, Devon.   

Prodigious Devon breeder, Malcolm Hurd of the Whitefield Herd, Somerset, took Breed Champion with his bull Whitefield Knight-of-the-Realm, a bull of true Devon type, bought by Mr RM Auvray to take home to Bideford for his Stone Farm herd.

Females also sold well with demand outstripping supply.  George Vellacott of Dulverton Somerset, had a good day taking Champion Female with his two year in-calf heifer Ashway Poppy 2^nd, and reserve champion female with Ashway Holly 1^st, who was also the highest priced female at 2000 gns, bought by Mr M A Collins who came down from Warwickshire and went home with Champion and Reserve Champion females.

Although West Country buyers were as well represented as ever, plenty of Devons were making the trip to new homes further afield including Oxfordshire, Warwickshire, Leicestershire, and Norfolk, underlining the strength and depth for this favourite west country export which is increasingly seen by mainstream beef farmers as the “x factor” in their quest to produce premium beef from minimal inputs.

No less than 27 sold for over 2000gns to a top of 2450gns for the June calved ‘Stourbere Out Barbara’ who was in her third lactation & by ‘Littlebredy Outsider’. Due to the recent demand for collective sales, Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt staged a November Collective sale at Sedgemoor Auction Centre on Tuesday 8th and drew an entry of 270 head.

The day started with South West Breeders collective milk and it was FH Chave & Sons ‘Peacehay’ herd that produced the day’s top priced cow and heifer. ‘Peacehay Margy 14th’ by ‘Regancrest Mr-Drham Sam’ an October calved heifer topped the day at 2180gns and their 2nd calver ‘Peacehay Silver 47th GP82’ by ‘Lucente’ topped the cows at 2050gns.

Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt report an exceptional trade for Tim and Kevin Bailey's 3rd Bi-Annual Sale of their homebred commercial Holsteins. The calved heifers stole the show selling to 2,400gns on three occasions for August & September calved daughters of ‘Outside' and a September calved daughter of ‘Blitz'. No less than six of the seven top priced heifers that sold from 2,200gns - 2,400gns were by ‘Comestar Outside'.

Wednesday 26th October 2011 was the day Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt were on farm for the dispersal of Tom & Tara Morris's unique organic New Zealand bred dairy herd. Describing himself as past his sell by date Tom had followed the grazing system for the past 15 years with much success. The day generated a great deal of interest from organic and conventional farmers with the spring milk being in strongest demand. The non recorded cows averaging 5484kgs from grass all year round topped at 1600gns for a 2008 second calver that had calved in March and was due in March again to the New Zealand Friesian. April Calved heifers sold to 1520gns as did 3rd calvers due again in April.

Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt held their annual September Special Sale at Sedgemoor Auction Centre on Tuesday 13th September and an excellent attendance witnessed a continued strong dairy trade across the board. The sale started with the collective fresh milk with Roland & Simon Buglers Bettiscombe Herd topping the day at 2280gns for ‘Talent Jane 18th' GP82 who had calved to her second a month ago. It was the cows that were in strongest demand with the 2nd calvers ‘Bettiscombe Beacon Cross Stitch' by their own ‘Goldwyn Beacon' bull selling for 2250gns and DC Dennis & Son's ‘Arron Baxter Torch' VG85 also at 2250gns. The calved heifer ‘Bettiscombe Lucente Jemima' also sold at 2250gns and others to 2220gns for RK & SG Miller & Sons ‘Moorshard Dictator Katey', 2200gns for CJ & JA Reed's ‘Yardhayes Braveheart Sarah'.

Rowden Farm dispersal tops at 2100gns

John Harris-Jarvis decision to travel to New Zealand and visit his brother led to the dispersal of his NMR recorded commercial dairy herd at Rowden Farm, Long Bredy, Dorchester, Dorset. Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt were delighted to be back on farm in Dorset and sold to a large crowd which generated 36 different purchasers from Cornwall to Wiltshire and topped at 2100gns for an August calved 4th lactation cow by ‘Cogent Reward’.

The sale was the largest herd dispersal to be held in the South of England this year. 91 different purchasers from Cornwall, to Norfolk, to Yorkshire & a large West Wales contingent made the most of the sale with 34 purchasers buying on both days.

Tuesday 19th July was the 22nd Annual Top 10% and Seasonality Sale at the West Country’s Sedgemoor Auction Centre.  The fresh milk trade was exceptional with no less than 51% of the entries selling for over 2000gns to a top of 2450gns for Roland and Simon Bugler’s “Bettiscombe Principal Tabatha” a June calved heifer  in the top 10% of the breed.  The 9 Heifers from the “Bettiscombe” herd averaged £2,201.50.  It was also a “Bettiscombe” cow that topped at 2150gns being the 2nd calver “Kendall Miss America”.  P J Andrews of Lower Venton, Plymouth sold calved heifers to 2200gns for “Beneknowle Shottle Voalije” a top 10% June calved heifer and cows to 2050gns for “Beneknowle Lucente Burgundy 18th” VG85.  The Holsteins bulls were in much demand topping the sale at 2800gns for R K & S G Millers “Moorshard Partner” a February 2010 “Sanchez” son from the Paradise” family.  The second Bull “Peacehay Blackmagic” a “Shottle” from the “Raven” family from F H Chase & Son sold for 1800gns.

Joint Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt and Symonds and Sampson were on farm at Blandford Forum Dorset for the Dalton family to disperse their Manor Farm Pimperne herd of commercial Holsteins on Tuesday 28th June.  No less than 41 different purchasers that had travelled from as far a field as Sussex, Hereford & Cumbria made a very strong trade on the day especially for fresh milk.

Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt were on farm at Manor Farm Wiveliscombe on Thursday 23rd June 2011 for the dispersal of the “Manor” Herd for MP & E Leigh-Firbank.  The Leigh-Firbank name has been synonymous with the breeding of Holstein Cattle in the South West for many decades.  A large crowd witnessed the 265 head go under the hammer with 50 successful purchasers taking cattle across the country from Devon to Sussex to Camarthen.

The Colleton herd of Grania & Simon Phillips, Chulmleigh, Devon swept the board in the pre-sale show at the Devon Cattle Breeders’ Society Spring Show & Sale at Sedgemoor Auction Centre. Championship sash was awarded by Judge Phillip Huxtable (Barton) to ‘Colleton Halcyon’ a March 2008 son of homebred ‘Dandy Lion’ the 2008 joint Stock Bull of the Year, with an EBV of 51 this is the highest ranked recorded bull in the breed. The judge described him as “a big strong powerful growthy bull with superior fleshing” and went on to purchase him at £3150.

A huge crowd packed the ringside at Sedgemoor Auction Centre for the Devon Cattle Breeders’ Society Autumn Show & Sale. The pre sale show saw Stonegrove Livestock’s (Worcs) April 07 born ‘Bywood Benny’ catch the Judges eye (John May – Priorton Herd) but it was the Reserve Champion from John Gilson’s Challenge Herd – ‘Brigadier 6th’ that captured the crowd and he was eventually sold to Buith Wells breeders Briggs & Capps (Ciliau) at £3150. Brigadier is the 6th son of former herd sire to be sold in Society Show & Sales and has brothers who have sold for £8065 and £8000.

Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt were at Lower West Barn Farm, near Frome, Somerset on Tuesday 4th August 2009 for the Dispersal of Mr and Mrs Ron Ham’s 9,000 kgs. non pedigree dairy herd. A wet day saw records tumble. Auctioneer Derek Biss commented that despite falling milk prices this was the best trade he had seen since 1993. Over 40 years of breeding was rewarded when a crowd of over 200 people witnessed his milking and incalf heifer portion sell to a new record price for a non pedigree cow of 4100 gns.

A day of celebrating 100 years of black and white breeding started with the herd visit to the 2009 South West Herd competition winning ‘Moorshard’ herd belonging to the club president Randolph Miller and his son Brian. Judge Colin Hutchings (Bovey herd) better known in recent times in the Aberdeen Angus & Limousin worlds returned to his roots to judge 4 very strong classes of bulls.

All of the cows were sold as seen without any milk records, but this did not prevent a packed ringside chasing cows that were mostly due from April to August to Black and White, Aberdeen Angus and Belgian Blue service sires. The trade for the type of cattle on offer exceeded expectations and fully justified the vendor’s decision to move the cattle to a part of the country where demand would be at its greatest.

Greenslade Taylor Hunts first dairy herd dispersal of the year was held at Sedgemoor Auction Centre on Tuesday 10th February 2009, when Jim Selway of Easton, Wells dispersed his 9,000kg Holstein Friesian Herd. An August second calver by “Patron” that has been served in January sold for 2150gns and her heifer calf by “Newstead NLQ Havana” which followed her through the ring sold for 600gns. Both animals travelled to different farms in Wincanton.

With the shortage in dairy cattle continuing an outstanding trade for the best on offer was witnessed. The sale topped at 2310gns for the freshly calved heifer “Yardgrove Stormatic Nell PI” consigned by Messrs E Gay & Sons. She was purchased as a heifer calf from David & Oliver Coombes herd dispersal and was from the “Crichel Nell” family with a dam that gave 10,000kgs as a heifer.

Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s on-farm sales department reflect on a year of exceptional Dairy cattle trades. During 2008 they conducted 32 Livestock and 15 Machinery sales. A total of 5,293 head were sold to a top Holstein price of 8,000 gns for Chris Reed’s ‘Culverhayes Talent Lydia’ VG82-2yr which was sold at his parents dispersal on the 17th July. It was the ‘Culverhayes’ Cows in Devon that claimed the years highest milk dispersal average at £1992.55. However the Herd Dispersals started in style with Crab Farms ‘Hemsworth’ Herd going under the hammer in Dorset at the end of February selling to 3,500 gns for the VG85 2nd calver ‘Hemsworth Sinatra Fairy’.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s final dairy sale of the year attracted buyers from Cornwall to Cumbria with a number crossing the bridge into Wales. The weekly commercial section set the scene with a heifer from AA Witcombe & Son topping the section at £2050 & £2040. At £2000 was a French heifer from GCB Davis which was matched by one of his French cows. Mr RF Tucker & Son also sold a second calver for £2000.

The demand for fresh milk continued with the days top call at 2150gns being paid for “Westhaye Stormatic Jupiter” that was one of a twin that had calved to her second lactation in October and was giving 43.8 kgs. daily with a SCC of 24. The Lot before her was a 4th calver by “Comestar Lee” that with a SCC of 8 and giving 48 kgs. sold for 2020gns, both lots sold to different purchasers from Gloucester.

Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt report a continuing strong trade for fresh milk at the “Camelot” Herd Sale on Friday 21st November for Compton Farm Limited. Despite the herds covered yard status and the time of year the quality of the cows and the demand for milk which was available in abundance drew purchasers from Bedfordshire, Glos and Devon to make the most of one of the final herd dispersals of the year.

After a years break the South Western Counties Shorthorn Breeders’ Association held their Annual Show & Sale at Sedgemoor Auction Centre on Saturday 27th September.  The show was kindly sponsored by Lloyds TSB Bank Plc and judged by Mrs Margaret Burrough from the “Gateshayes” Herd. The Show Champion was from the Societies Chairman Mr Trevor Cligg a third calved cow “Rodway Pecketsford Marie 2nd” who went on to sell for 1200gns.

Brian Morris’s decision to send the Milking and Heifer calf portion of his Nunwell herd to Sedgemoor Auction centre for Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt to sell was well rewarded with a top price of 2520gns for the calved heifer “Nunwell Peridot Twinkle” that had calved at the beginning of September, by Delta Peridot she was out of 2 generations of 11,000kg dams and her heifer calf that was by “Aquilla Patron Lucente”.

The resurgence in popularity of the Red Ruby Devon Cattle showed no sign of abating at the “Gittisham” Herd dispersal held at Hayne Farm on Thursday 11th September for Combe Estate.  For what was believed to have been the largest Red Ruby Herd Dispersal ever staged with 356 head catalogued Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt reported an attendance of well over 500 people.  The “Gittisham” cattle ended up travelling from Cornwall to Scotland with interest expressed from abroad.

Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt were at Manor Farm, Forton on Thursday 10th April 2008 for the Dispersal of the Adams Brothers Dairy Herd.  The emphasis at Manor Farm had been to breed traditional cows that could provide for both the Dairy and Beef Enterprises.  103 head produced 31 different purchasers from Dartmouth to Bristol.  Top price of the day was 2200gns for “Janice” a November 1st calver by “Brabant Star Patron” that was giving 29.8 kgs with a scc of 26.  She was purchased by local dairy farmers D & M Brunt.

The Red Ruby Devon Breed record price was broken by almost double at the Devon Cattle Breeders Society Spring Show and Sale held at Sedgemoor Livestock Centre, Somerset.  A line up of 28 show bulls , the largest entry for many years, was headed by Champson Defender a 24 month old son of Primore Thorald bred and shown by G Dart and Sons, Molland.  Judge Margaret Elliott of the renowned bull breeding Cutcombe herd told a packed ring side some six deep that her Champion was everything a Red Ruby Devon bull should be with total balance, tremendous presence, evenly distributed natural fleshing (weighed at 903 kg) and outstanding locomotion.

Igniter Daughters Light the Trade at Sedgemoor

The Vicary families decision to sell a significant proportion of their ‘Peevee’ herd by moving them from Kent to Sedgemoor Auction Centre was rewarded with a top price of 2,400 gns for the recently classified Good Plus 83 ‘Peevee Igniter Cavail’ a December 2007 calved 1st lactation heifer by Summershade Igniter that was giving 35 kgs with a SCC of 21 and served again to the Hennikers Sam bull.  No less than 9 lots sold for over 2,000 gns all of which were either 1st or 2nd lactation apart from ‘Peevee Meadow Lord Emma’ VG85, SP at 2050 gns who was a December 3rd calver that had given 11,000 kgs in her 2nd lactation and was now producing 46 kgs with an SCC of 15.  She had a PLI of £+112 and was out of a VG89 dam.

The dairy dispersal for Vigar Webb (deceased) topped at 1800gns for a January calved 2nd calver by Etazon Lord Lily.  A February 2nd calver was close behind at 1750gns, with 32 lots over 1000gns.  The first quality cows averaged £1027.47 for the dispersal.  6 Brown Swiss cows averaged £1206.66.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s first on farm dairy dispersal sale of the year was held on Wednesday 27th February at Higher Dairy, Shapwick, Blandford where Crab Farms dispersed their old established 9,000kgs “Hemsworth” Herd.  Thirty Eight different purchasers from Barnstaple to Kent made the most of the opportunity to purchase the Tory family’s well bred, high yielding, loose housed cows and followers.

Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s Farm Sales Department commenced 2008 with the 16th Annual Quota Filler Sale at the new Sedgemoor Auction Centre on Tuesday 22nd January 2008.  With the probability of reaching quota very unlikely in the foreseeable future the recent excellent trade for dairy cattle continued.  The sale topped at 2350gns for FH Chave & Son’s “Peacehay Twenid 57th” an outstanding three year old heifer that had calved in December and was giving 36kgs daily.  She was by the homebred “Peacehay Lucifer” sire and out of a GP83 10,000kgs dam.
