Live & Dead Stock

In 1996 Greenslade Hunt and R B Taylor & Sons, were both expanding their specialist Farm Sales departments to such an extent that, in August of that year, the two firms merged, allowing them to set up an unrivalled professional business of considerable regional importance.

The Farm Sales department will have a prominent role to play in the new Sedgemoor Auction Centre with Partner Derek Biss moving to the new location. His assistant, Sally Mitchell, is the first fully qualified female in the firm, who as an Associate Partner, now shares the rostrum with Derek, will remain in Yeovil to service the expanding client base in East Somerset, Dorset and Wiltshire. The department’s expansion now makes Greenslade Taylor Hunt the leading firm of Dispersal Sale Auctioneers in the South of England.

Greenslade Taylor Hunt have developed the Dairy & Specialist Sales ring at the new market to enhance the regular sales that are held for breed societies and cattle breeders’ clubs and associations. Production, Reduction and Dispersal sales are held on farms and Collective sales in the Livestock Centre. Sedgemoor now stages one of the largest weekly collective Dairy Sales in the country attracting regular buyers from as far a field as Cheshire , Wales & Cornwall.

Our own cataloguing staff are thoroughly familiar with the herd books, the requirements of principal cattle breed societies and, the analysis of milk and performance records. Our in-house printing service enables us to organise sales at very short notice at very competitive rates.

Free ‘On Farm’ Advice

Free ‘on farm’ advice is always without obligation throughout the South of England and . Our representatives regularly travel into the less intensive dairy areas of , , Norfolk and the Midland Counties .

Operating three days a week at the Sedgemoor Auction Centre enables us to keep constantly in touch with stock values and movements in the market and to advise on the best place and the best time to market stock of all types and ages.

Derek Biss is the sole dairy auctioneer at the new market. The main weekly market with an average entry of 50 is at present on Saturdays with the added attraction of smaller weekly entries being invited on Mondays. These entries comprise of mostly freshly calved cows and heifers of all breeds. Vendors are either in the business of producing freshly calved stock or dispersing their herds as they calve.

Dispersal Sales of Live and Dead Farming Stock

Greenslade Taylor Hunt combines a wealth of experience in the conducting of dispersal sales of live and dead farming stock on farms for those who may be wishing to retire, reduce their commitments or to change their farming policy. We have three portable sale rings with up to 300 livestock hurdles and where appropriate, can arrange for the hire of a marquee.

With the migration of dairy stock to the West Country, Greenslade Taylor Hunt is utilising the splendid facilities at the Sedgemoor Auction Centre to move small and large herds from the east to the west of the country where the demand is much greater fuelled by the extensive cull of cattle due to bovine TB.

With export demand good, second hand machinery continues to meet an active market. Large crowds are always guaranteed at our Dead Stock sales where we have still resisted the temptation of regularly introducing buyers’ premiums on farm machinery. Our close and regular contacts with the trade always ensure satisfactory prices.

In addition to dispersal sales the following are regularly held:

Quarterly Collective Dairy Sales for South West Breeders
Breed Society Sales for the “Ruby Red” Devons and the Longhorns
Grass Keep in the Spring
Standing Straw and Maize in the Summer / Autumn
Hay, straw, silage, roots etc in the winter
Quarterly Implements and Machinery Sales
Comprehensive Valuation Service
This constant activity in the market place enables the Greenslade Taylor Hunt Agricultural division to provide a comprehensive valuation service for all classes of livestock, both pedigree and commercial, for implements and machinery. We can deal with valuations on the termination of a tenancy, for probate, divorce or partnership dissolution purposes and on growing crops and unconsumed produce following the sale of a farm.

Appointed Valuers for DEFRA
