As farmgate milk prices rise dairy trade firms at Sedgemoor

As farmgate milk prices rise dairy trade firms at Sedgemoor

July 2017

With the summer in full swing (although hard to believe as we look outside the window to the usual British weather!), the dairy industry is continuing to look optimistically forward to autumn as a shortage of milk bolsters farmgate prices.  The dairy cattle trade has firmed over recent months with the July sales seeing strong trades for quality cattle.  Highlights have included the Gold Cup Winners Sale of 83 milkers from the ever impressive Bettiscombe herd which averaged over £2000 and a very strong youngstock trade for the extremely classy Whitamhall Holsteins Herd Reduction Sale.

As we look ahead to the next month, dairy cattle are in very short supply across the whole of the west country and with an increasing demand as milk prices rise trade is predicted to stay firm. We are seeing a large amount of demand for autumn milk as well as fresh milk and large groups of cattle are hard to source. The shortage of sales means that now is the time to take stock of what surplus you may have for the autumn and winter months!

Sedgemoor Auction Centre has a number of marketing opportunities for all types of dairy cattle, with weekly sales held every Saturday with 100 entered last Saturday with vendors from Kent Cornwall, Carmarthen, Gloucestershire and Wiltshire. As well as special catalogued monthly sales and a much-viewed private treaty sales register.

The Dairy department are currently cataloguing for their next monthly sale on Tuesday 22nd August for which the entries deadline is Monday 7th August, to place entries or for further details please contact 01278 410250 or livestock@gth.net.

Dam of Top Price - Wiltor Chipper Rosie Red Polled VG89-3yr

Sedgemoor’s Spotlight Sale Shines to 5100gns

July 2017

The showcase sale of Pedigree Holsteins, Jerseys and Brown Swiss saw crowds flock from all across the UK including Ireland with keen bidding throughout ensuring a 90% clearance rate and achieving over 5000gns twice!

Top price went to Wiltor Rory Rosie Red Polled who is out of the 2017 UK Dairy Expo Red and White Champion and in the words of her breeder and the vendor David Jones from Monmouthshire ‘The best cow he has ever bred’. This heifer was both red and polled and hailed from the Roxy family and she finds her new home in Dorset with Young Breeder Jake Symms of the Symba Herd.

Second top price also comes from a top show cow, Riverdane SVS Atlee VG88-2yr who was chosen as one of the team to represent the UK at the European Championships last year, was twice All Britain awarded and was also Champion calf at the All Britain show. Her Doorman Riverdane DM Atlee, who travelled down from Cheshire from Mark & Susan Nutsford, a sublime pedigree with her second dam being the full sister to the Type bull Atwood meaning she was secured by Gloucestershire Breeder Mike Robertson for 5000gns.

2016 dairy round up

December 2016

There is no doubt that the past 12 months have been a very difficult time for the dairy industry with the milk price crashing from a great height during the latter half of 2015 writes Andy Clements, auctioneer and valuer with Greenslade Taylor Hunt, who is based at Sedgemoor Auction Centre, Junction 24, North Petherton.  The impact of this crash really started to take its toll on dairy farmers as the year 2016 commenced.  January brought with it some excellent sales to include the Hartlandview Herd from Andrew Lewis and the high yielding herd of PH Creed and Son which set the trade for the beginning of the year.

Sedgemoor Market's Meg Chilcott shines at Stafford's English Winter Fair

Sedgemoor Market's Meg Chilcott shines at Stafford's English Winter Fair

November 2016

Congratulations are the order of the day as Meg Chilcott has had tremendous success at this year's English Winter Fair.  Meg is a familiar face at Sedgemoor Market every Saturday and Monday.

The English Winter Fair, which was held on Saturday 19th November at Staffordshire County Showground, attracted exhibitors from the length and breadth of the UK.

Meg and family beat off fierce competition to win the Champion Crossbred Steer, having already taken 1st prize in the lightweight Limousin class.  She was also 1st with a Blonde heifer, going on to win the Blonde trophy and 3rd in the Homebred Heifer class.

Meg similarly had huge success with her sheep, when she won the Native Lamb Championship with her Southdowns.  She also had a 1st prize with her Rouge lambs.  Of further interest, her brother Percy Clatworthy won 2nd prize in the Jacob class.

Many congratulations to Meg and her family for these great achievements.

John Vinnicombe

Loyal Sedgemoor Supporter John Vinnicombe Stars in New PGI West Country Beef Film

November 2016

In January 2014 West Country Beef was awarded PGI status.  The PGI recognises the unique heritage West Country beef farmers have to enable them to produce beef from wonderful grass fields, due to the wet and mild climate, along with the amount of sunshine the region benefits from to encourage grass growth.

PGI stands for Protected Geographical Indicator and is a designation which recognises when a region produces food in a certain way using a unique process.

John Vinnicombe of Ottery St Mary, Devon stars in a newly produced film for the PGI.  It was funded by the NBA's South West Beef event and the film was recently premiered at this year's show.  John is a loyal supporter of Sedgemoor's prime cattle sales and is passionate about producing superb quality beef by grazing his cattle on the nutrient rich fields along the River Otter.  John regularly tops the market as he produces just what the market wants.

Rob Venner, Managing Partner of Sedgemoor Market and Chairman of Beef South West, said that "We wanted to do something really positive with the profits from 2015's Beef South West event.  When Meat South West, which obtained the PGI, thought of producing a promotional film, I knew immediately John would be an ideal subject.  I think John must be congratulated for the super job he has done in representing West Country Beef."

Sedgemoor South West Winter Fair promises to be the best yet

November 2016

This year's South West Winter Fair, to be held on Monday 5th December is shaping up to be one of the best yet.  Near record entries have been received on the Haltered Cattle section.  We have also received a record entry of 20 in the Baby Beef section, which is kindly being sponsored by Mrs Fran Evens for the second year running.  In the senior classes 55 prime stockers have been entered including the recent Champion and Reserve Champion from Beef South West.  So competition is going to be fierce.

New for 2016 is a class for haltered cattle being exhibited by pupils from Brymore School.  The school has been encouraging high quality stockmanship for several years and the creation of a class solely for Brymore pupils is another progression of those efforts and gives the boys a great opportunity to demonstrate the skills which they have learnt.

With 85 haltered and unhaltered show cattle on offer the show gives local butchers a tremendous opportunity to source prime beef ready for Christmas.

In addition to the cattle classes the show boasts an entry of 71 pens of lambs, 20 carcase lambs, 20 dressed poultry, 15 pens of pigs and last but by no means least the hotly contested South West Sausage Competition, which has 26 entries this year.  There will also be numerous trade stands ranging from livestock feed companies, tractor and machinery dealerships to accountants and tag manufacturers, to name but a few.

Judging commences at 9.30am for the haltered cattle, lambs and pigs.  Entry to the show continues to be free for the public.  With potential prize money of £1750 up for grabs for the Champion of the Haltered Cattle section, competition is bound to be keen and it is hoped many will come forward to support what promises to be a wonderful show.

Sedgemoor Experiences Largest Ever Sheep Entry to Date

Sedgemoor Experiences Largest Ever Sheep Entry to Date

August 2016

On Saturday 13th August 2016 we experienced the largest sheep entry ever seen at Sedgemoor.  With a grand total of 5714 head Sedgemoor's sheep section was bursting at the seams.

A similar steady trade ensued across the board with 2080 store lambs peaking at £88 whilst 1231 grazing ewes and rams topped at £118 for shapely Texels.

The huge entry of breeding ewes, which included a Special Catalogued Sale of 2378 Suffolk & Mule cross ewes, sold to a good level of interest to £127 (x 4 pens) from Mr R Sizmur of Okehampton.

After last week's catalogued sale a reduced entry of rams topped at £320 (x 2) for Chartex shearlings from Mr EJ Mills of Raddington.

The sheep section was part of an unseasonably large August entry for Sedgemoor Market with a head count of 1256 store cattle, stirks and sucklers and a grand total of 7592.  Strong stores rang the bell at £1380 for a superb Blue steer from Messrs Bell of Westhay.  Quality stirks sold to another strong trade topping at £1045 for a Limousin steer from Mr IC Churchill of Axminster.  Also for the first time this year a Dairy heifer achieved £2000 for Mr JG Morgan of Tewkesbury as confidence in this sector begins to build again.

Review of 2015 at Sedgemoor Auction Centre

January 2016

2015 will only be looked back upon as a disappointing year for farmers. Low milk, corn, lamb and an easing beef price all at the same time, writes Robert Venner, Partner at Greenslade Taylor Hunt, based at Sedgemoor Auction Centre. Cash flow has been very difficult. A Flying June Trade at Sedgemoor

A Flying June Trade at Sedgemoor

June 2015

Wow - what a day was had at Sedgemoor on Saturday!  A sensational trade was experienced across the board in all cattle rings with records being smashed along the way.

The balloon has gone up in the store cattle ring!  Trade has jumped up in excess of £100 per head over the last three weeks, regaining lost ground to the high levels experienced after Christmas.  An excellent entry of 488 head when a tremendous 24m feeding Blue steer rang the bell at £1375 from Mr GW King of Meare.  Buyers have renewed belief and are chasing cattle.  The trade is hot - it is time to sell.

A massive entry of 242 suckler cattle met a flying trade for all on offer when an amazing 100% clearance across the board was experienced.  Top price was £2100 for a Pedigree Charolais cow and bull calf at foot from John Wylde.  With an entry of almost 30 bulls, a record for a monthly sale, a complete clearance exceeded all expectations to a top price of £3000 for a 22m Limousin bull from the Neale family.

The stirk ring was by no means outdone either when a packed ring of buyers produced another sensational trade.  Top price was £1000 for an 11m Charolais steer from Messrs EA & DA Ellis of Cornwall.

Last but by no means least was the calf ring.  A larger entry of 426 head met a very keen trade all day when all classes were keenly contested by an increased number of buyers from across the region.  Top of the day was £490 for Blues from Mr N George at 10-14 weeks.  An excellent show of calves which attracted 69 different buyers to Sedgemoor.

It seems that Sedgemoor is serving the South West well.  A big thank you to all vendors for your continued support.  We are pleased that you are all being well rewarded for your efforts.

Store Cattle Ring

A Magnificent Valentine's Day Trade at Sedgemoor

February 2015

Records were again being smashed at Sedgemoor Market on Saturday 14th February.  A sensational trade was experienced in several sections.

For the second time this year a new record Store Cattle average was set at £958, being over £100 up on 12 months ago.  Some tremendous cattle were presented to a top of £1550, being achieved by Mr Roger Morrish of Torrington for an exceptional 25m and Farm Assured Charolais steer, a near record top price.  Congratulations to Roger and family for providing a top drawer consignment of cattle.  Store heifers were crowned by a run of excellent quality pedigree and purebred Limousins from Mr Julian Cranton of Wareham, Dorset at £1450.

A small entry of sucklers and a plethora of purchasers resulted in a record trade for all and a good trade for stock bulls.  The top price of £1920 was achieved for a purebred British Blue cow with a 1m heifer calf from Phil and Jackie White of Wellington.  A good run of bulls sold to £2250 for a 19m Limousin from Mr & Mrs DK Wheeler of Cullompton.  Many more sucklers are requested to meet the current demand.

The Stirk Ring also saw a marvellous trade when some quality consignments were forward to top at £1000 for an 11m Limousin heifer from Mr Geoff Miller of Burrowbridge.

The Sheep Section was not to be outdone with a flying trade for Store Lambs to £93.50 from Mr Elliott Davis and Cull Ewes to £123.50 from John and Roger Maynard of Exeter.

Many congratulations and thanks to our Vendors and with a trade that by all accounts is "on fire", we would strongly suggest that now is the time to sell at Sedgemoor.

Tractor Run Smashes £10,000 Target

Tractor Run Smashes £10,000 Target

February 2015

One of the farmers who became the face of the Somerset Floods, James Winslade, is among a group of farmers who have launched a new charity to help colleagues in crisis - Forage Aid.

The Charity set out on a tractor run from Sedgemoor Auction Centre on Monday 9th February 2015, a year after James and other farmers on the Somerset Levels were forced to flee their homes and evacuate their livestock as the worst floods in living memory wreaked havoc.

Recalling the trauma James said "There was no help anywhere.  Thank goodness for Robert Venner and all the market staff".

Just minutes after the last of the livestock were safely rehoused at Sedgemoor Market the first of the forage lorries arrived from Scotland with essential feed.

Before the rescue James had put a message on Twitter about the plight of the Levels farmers.  Within hours he had received 198 telephone calls and 68 answerphone messages, all offering help.

He was overwhelmed with the response and it prompted him to set up Forage Aid to help other farmers in their hour of need.

"Farming is hard enough without extra layers of stress put on", said James.

Initially he hoped the tractor run would raise £10,000, but this target has been smashed and it now looks like the event will bring in £20,000.

The run travelled through the West Country before ending at Telford on Wednesday 11th February, at the Energy Now Expo Event.

James and his family moved back onto their farm in October, but there is still another three months of work to restore the property to it's pre-flood state.

"What has kept us going is the level of support," said James.

There was a real buzz at sale time as the heifer went on to achieve £3,700.  The successful purchasers were The Butchers at Darts Farm Ltd, Topsham.  The price equated to 672.8ppk.  The Reserve Championship was won by Mr DE & Mrs SJ Cheacker of Pilning with a 17m homebred Limousin steer, which went on to sell at £1,800 (267.8ppk) to Puxton Park Butchers of Hewish.

TB Orange Markets gain momentum at Sedgemoor

November 2014

Numbers are greatly increasing at our Orange Markets as vendors become confident of a good trade for their forward store cattle, barren cows and finished cattle.

The total head of stock at our last sale was 377 (comprising of 277 store cattle and 100 cows/finished cattle).  These large entries are in turn attracting buyers from across the country to ensure a competitive trade on par with open sales and at times even dearer.

Vendors who are in the unfortunate position of being under TB restriction can be reassured that they can continue to sell their stock at Sedgemoor and achieve the best possible price.

Churchvale Numero Ambrosia - Sold for 4800gns

Sedgemoor Spotlight hits 7000gns

July 2013

The annual Spotlight Sale held at Sedgemoor Auction Centre on Tuesday 16th July 2013 saw a fantastic trade. The January 2013 born heifer, ‘Riverdane Clay Autumn’ took the top honours, being bred from one of the most prominent families in the Holstein Breed and backed by a superb sire stack, she drew a lot of interest. She had travelled all the way from Mark and Susan Knutsford’s ‘Riverdane’ herd in Cheshire to Sedgemoor and after some spirited bidding reaching 7000gns she continues south to Join Mr Hussels ‘Perrins’ herd based in Badworthy Cornwall.

The second highest price came at 5000gns was from Sahara Holsteins with ‘Koepon Domain Melody 2nd.’ She had recently been classified VG86 as a two year old, and being from a family that has been placing numerous bulls into AI, she again had numerous admirers and the bidding finally ended with Drointon Farms who were purchasing her jointly with Mr JL Gray from Drumtall Scotland.  She was not the only Lot heading to Scotland with Peter Prior’s Smartmove Atom Gail EX90, who was Honourable Mention at the previous weeks Kent Show, at 3000gns she makes the Journey to Mr Vietch’s ‘Doonvalley’ herd in Ayrshire.

The West Country was also in good Spirit’s with Ian Chave from ‘Peacehay’ picking out some fancy calves, at 4800gns he took home ‘Churchvale Numero Ambrosia’ from Richard Thomas, Carmarthen and also ‘Riverdane Ex Ruby’ from Riverdane Holsteins, Cheshire.

Other Cows reaching notable prices include ‘Wiltor Million Cream VG88’ from Claire Jones, Monmouthshire at 4600gns, ‘Richaven Champion Squaw VG86’ at 3200gns and ‘Springtime Wisconsin Molli Red VG85-2yr’ at 3000gns both for Designer Holsteins, Essex and Bev Bakers ‘BB Million Ghost’ also at 3000gns.

Other youngstock of note included Tim Quick’s ‘Mendip Windbrook Lustre’ at 3000gns and Brian and Randolph Millers, ‘Moorshard Spottie Shower’, a January Born Heifer at 2500gns.

Next year instead of the Spotlight Sale, Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt have been favoured with instructions to conduct the 2014 Holstein UK Genetic Elite Sale at Sedgemoor Auction Centre. Look out for further information in due course.

Sedgemoor is pushing the trade to new levels!

February 2013

A phenomenal run of record breaking prices have been experienced at Sedgemoor of late.  We have had records broken in the Store Cattle, Prime Cattle and Barren Cow sections for two weeks in a row.  Are these records a direct result of the horse meat scandal?  It seems fair to assume that the answer is yes, as the current crisis in the food processing industry comes on top of years of price reductions, which have driven many from farming, resulting in the current scarcity of stock. Farmers and auction markets have full traceability.  Buying from livestock markets continues an open and transparent food chain.  Liveweight markets are on the farmers' side and yet again the need for their existence has been proven, in order for fair prices to be achieved and to push the trade up when needed.  The future looks very promising indeed for beef and if proper country of origin labelling is introduced and only beef is sold as beef, demand may improve even further and further records may be set yet again.

Weekly Dairy Sales’ Continued Success

March 2012

Sedgemoor Auction Centre is now one of the few markets in the UK that operate a large dairy sale on a weekly basis.

Last Saturday’s entry of 75 mostly Commercial calved heifers and cows saw a super trade for the best on offer with 11 over £2,000. A top of £2,400 was for a Pedigree M E Dal Alliance heifer from R Pike & Son of Gillingham, Dorset purchased by J Gardener of Bude, Cornwall for a client. Geoff Morgan of Tewkesbury travelled 80 miles to offer his two Pedigree heifers, which realised £2,320 for a “Samuelo” daughter from the Devon based “Stokehouse” herd, and he also sold a “Treetop” bred “Laurin” daughter going back to “Portledge” for £2,320. Richard Kallaway’s heifer that was first in the ring on the day realised £2,160. The “Curscombe” herd of Colin Bishop’s again attracted a lot of interest with a Pedigree heifer at £2,090 and Peter Summerfield travelled down from Oxford with heifers realising to £2,030.

Cows were in extremely short supply and the best sold to a premium of up £1,910 for Ed Vickery of Dorset. Youngstock continued to attract a lot of trade with 2 week old calves to £350 for TE Pocock & Son.

The market achieved a new record for first quality Commercial heifers at £2,050 and even second quality heifers averaged £1,680.
