Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt staged their final Collective Sale of the year with their annual show and festive merriment producing the best calf trade of the year and 15 over £2000.

Trade for the fresh milk was back on the previous month’s exceptional trade but still strong. The Top of the day went to Nick Bond’s ‘Birchwood Grazie Thorny 21st’, the show champion, who was a second lactation cow giving over 40kgs daily, she was from his continued phased dispersal and sold for 2400gns (£2520) to a volume buyer from West Wales.

Proving our judge, Rob Allen right, the second top price came from our Reserve Champion who was also the first placed heifer. She sold for 2350gns (£2467.50)to a pedigree breeder in West Wales, she was a VG86-2yr Raven from the renowned Peacehay herd of David & Ian Chave’s and she completed 10 generations of VG & EX’s.

Three more heifers made 2050gns from regular consignors and familiar names throughout the south west, being Treetop, Dinnaton and Peacehay.  As well as a 2000gns heifer from Beneknowle and cows to 2000gns from Peacehay and Birchwood.

Youngstock trade was anticipated to be easier due to the time of year and shortage of fodder stocks across the country, but on the whole this was not the case, the bumper entry of 70 unregistered calves met the fiercest trade of the year with many volume buyers competing for the quality stock on offer, resulting in the general comment of the younger they were the dearer they were. Calf trade topped at 540gns x2 for 5 month old calves from JF Cobb and 8 week old calves topped at 460gns for D Thorner.

The bulls topped at 1250gns for “Beneknowle Errol” an 18 month old Holstein Bull from PJ Andrews of Plymouth.

Incalf heifers sold to 1620gns twice for 8 month incalf pedigree heifers from GJ & FL Robertson being sold to both local Somerset and across the water to West Wales buyers. Organic incalf heifers sold to 1460gns for AH Warren Trust and commercial incalf heifers to 1400gns for PT & JC Hinds.

Bulling heifers sold to 880gns for KR & MK Powell who have quickly become one of our trusted regular consignors with their prizewinning Tyrywen herd from Caerphilly. Yearlings from Rookhaye (who notably were the only vendors to win prizes in all three classes) sold to 850gns and a last minute consignment that GTH turned around with two days’ notice saw the vendors TJ & MJ Lloyd & Partners from Pembrokeshire very pleased with their 9 month old heifers selling to 680gns.

A total of 43 successful buyers from Leicester to Cornwall and spanning West Wales to Wiltshire and of course our home counties as well, recorded the following excellent averages:
46Calved Heifers£1864.00
27Calved Cows£1840.00

53Incalf Heifers£1202.00
