The autumn calving Holstein x Ayrshire herd for MA & NR Bowditch of Crewkerne were a sight to behold when they were dispersed at Sedgemoor on Tuesday 15th December. Described as Holstein bodies with Ayrshire udders the cows were a credit to their breeders.

Top call of the day at £2152.50 came for the September calved second lactation cow giving 41.4 kgs. With six over £2000 to include 2x third lactation cows at 2050gns and a further 12 at £1995, trade held throughout the sale.

The majority of the 45 calved heifers had calved in at under 2 years of age in September. They sold to 1850gns for a “Peak Altarecoil” daughter calved at 1 year 9 months and giving 31.9 kgs. A further 7 calved heifers sold for 1700gns.

Two incalf heifers due March to the Aberdeen Angus sold to 1150gns and the 3 year old “Killerton” Limousin bull for 2050gns.

A combination of ringside and online bidders made the most of the opportunity presented to produce the following record average for crossbred cows at Sedgemoor Auction Centre:
