July 2022

To everyone’s delight auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt were back on farm at Crewkerne Somerset for the dispersal of the organic Holstein and Crossbred dairy herd and associated farm machinery and equipment on Tuesday 26th July for Marks Barn Farm Partnership.

A record crowd generated an excellent sale of both the live and deadstock with circa 100 successful purchasers on the day from Cornwall across the South West, Warwickshire, Wellington & Northern Ireland.  Despite the recent dry weather fresh milk still toped the cow trade at 2300gns for the fresh Holstein 2nd calver, with fresh calved Holstein heifers at 2080gns, Fleckvieh 2nd calvers 2020gns, Brown Swiss calved heifers 2000gns, Shorthorn 4th calvers 1880gns.  The demand was equally as strong for the autumn milk with Holstein 2nd calvers 2150gns, Fleckvieh 2nd calvers 2000gns, Ayrshire 3rd calvers 2000gns, Swedish Red 4th calvers 1900gns all due September and Fleckviehs due to their 4th in November 2000gns and strong trade throughout for the Jersey’s selling to 1850gns for an April calver in her 3rd lactation.  It is worth noting that 107 of the cows catalogued were in their 4th to 9th lactations lasting exceptionally well on the organic system.

The youngstock on offer were a credit to the farm and produced the strongest yougstock dispersal trade of the year with Dairy Shorthorn incalf heifers due September to Brown Swiss at 1950gns, Holsteins due to Shorthorn 1900gns, Brown Swiss due to Angus £1800gns and Fleckviehs due November 1750gns.  Brown Swiss x heifers born July 2021 topped the bullers at 880gns x 2 with August 2021 born heifers at 800gns x3. Heifers calves sold after their dams realised 560gns Shorthorn x, 550gns and 540gns Brown Swiss x.
