Champion livestock and the South West’s best sausages

The 12th South West Winter Fair took place at Sedgemoor Livestock Market on Monday 3rd December. The fair drew a large crowd of spectators who saw Paul & Lin Calcraft of Payhembury take the Haltered Cattle Championship with their Limousin heifer, Snow Gin. It was the second time that Paul & Lin have taken the top honours and the first time that the Haltered Championship has been won in consecutive years. Snow Gin sold for £2,600 and was bought by JM & AM Lewis of Carmarthenshire to go for breeding.

The Unhaltered Cattle Championship was won by Stafford & Jimmer Blake of Uplowman. Their Limousin heifer was returned for £1,567.49.

In the sheep section the Champion pen of lambs was shown by Stuart, Jenny & Percy Clatworthy and Megan Chilcott of Highbridge. Weighing an average of 38.6kg the lambs sold for £150 each. The Champion pen of pigs was won by Paul Stone of Bridgwater whose 70kg gilts sold for £135 each.

In a hotly contested sausage competition, the Championship was awarded to Tim Potter & Son & Daughter of Wellington for their speciality Pork, Sage and Cranberry sausage; perfect for the winter season. The Reserve Championship award was won by Regency Butchers of Bridgwater for their traditional recipe.

Rob Venner, partner of Sedgemoor Market, commented that he was staggered with the quality of stock on offer, after what had been a very trying year weather wise for producers. Huge amounts of effort had been made by exhibitors to produce such outstanding stock, for which they must be congratulated.
