Afligem was a February 2019 born heifer from an imported dam that hailed from the families of the famous cows Apple, Rachel, Altitude and August and bred in Shrewsbury by the keen young farmers. She was much admired throughout the day and as the hammer fell the successful bidders were Richards Brothers who purchased her for their Larks & Cadog herd based in West Wales.
One of the cover girls, Hennikers Byway Okarina, sold to Ian Chave for his Peacehay Herd at 4900gns. She was from a granddaughter of Okalibra, one of the greatest European Show cows, and Okarina herself had already been successful in the show ring.
Recently classified as VG87-2yr, Cramar Swallow A Cutes was the pick of the milking section with the hammer falling in favour of Mick Gould (Woodmarsh) who admired this super uddered heifer that had a pedigree of 4 dams that were all Ex94 or higher, three of them having already achieved 100 tonnes of milk with the closest dam well on her way to achieving the same.
The second youngest calf of the day attracted spirited bidding as she was the first offering from the Sully Shottle May family with an added attraction that she was red. She was bred by David & Ryan Renfree at their Hayvalley herd from Cornwall and sold to the Cotterell family from Somerset at 4000gns. The youngest calf at just 3 months old (and the last lot) by Secretariat, out of the Ghost family and bred at Woodmarsh, sold for 2600gns.
Two lots sold for 3800gns, being Foxcroft Army Legacy from Mike Rees & Robert Martin who sold to M Hussel (Perrins), and Woodmarsh MVP Zandra who sold to J O’Connor from Ireland, who in fact sold as a choice with her close relative by Unix at 3600gns with the second choice realising the higher price!
The top priced Brown Swiss was Lynn Robertson’s Elite Calvin Lovely at 2800gns, who sold into Devon, with Jerseys at 1100gns for Hennikers Global Milki selling to be shown by Josie Dowding.
Buyers from all across the UK ensured a 95% clearance rate by the end of the day and created the following averages:
