Both evening online auctions saw a large number of bids which led to some fantastic prices being achieved. The following averages were obtained at the sales:
|West of Taunton||East of Taunton|
|Winter Oilseed Rape||£62/acre||£40/acre|
All vendors were well rewarded for entering standing straw into the sales. The auction produced results beyond expectations, with winter barley topping at a whopping £148/acre, winter wheat reaching £132/acre, winter oats reaching £94/acre and winter oilseed rape realising £76/acre.
Auctioneer Tom Mellor commented after the sales “The challenging wet winter conditions that arable farmers experienced in 2019/2020 meant that the acreage of winter cereal crops sown in the south west, and nationally, was down dramatically. Despite the weight of straw crops looking lighter than previous years, the prices achieved are far higher. The averages realised are roughly 60% higher than last year, which taking in to account some vendors suggested their crops were 25% lighter this season, the straw crop value has jumped considerably on the year”.
