Time to Visit the Antiques Sale

An 18ct gold cased Swiss watch is attracting a good deal of pre-sale interest in advance of Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s first antique sale of the year on Thursday, January 12.

The watch by noted Swiss maker Universal Geneve features a signed gilt dial with arrow batons and markers, day date and half hunter style face inside case marked 750 18KT Uni de Swiss 128, movement marked Swiss Universal Geneve unadjusted 17 jewels 138C, fitted with a brown leather strap. It is guided at £400-£600.

A late Victorian 18ct gold open-faced pocket watch, hallmarked for Birmingham 1899 is also attracting interest. It is estimated at £300-£500.

Meanwhile the thirst for Oriental items continues to remain strong - this is illustrated by the number of viewers who have been drawn to a Chinese jade twin handled libation cup, which has been consigned from a quality Somerset house clearance. This has a pre-sale guide of £300-£500.

A good condition Persian Kashan carpet has also appealed to would-be buyers. It has a guide price of £700-£800, while a Lake District watercolour by acclaimed artist William Heaton Cooper RA, has a pre-sale estimate of £300-£500.

The January sale will also include a distinctive selection celebrating the best of 20th Century Design. Valuer Simon Rayner, curates this section of the sale. Familiar names such as Moorcroft, Ercol and Georg Jensen will all feature.

Among the likely crowd pleasers is an iconic Ercol “pebble” set of three occasional tables. The set is in good condition and has a guide price of £200-£300.

On the sale catalogue’s cover is a splendid example of a Georg Jensen piece. By Johann Rohde for Georg Jensen this is a Danish sterling silver “Louvre” centrepiece bowl, with hand hammered bowl on openwork leaf and berry stem and circular spreading foot. 

Originally designed in 1912 this good condition lot is marked post 1945. It is estimated at £400-£600.

The sale will be on view on Tuesday, January 10, and Wednesday, January 11, from 9am-4pm and an hour prior to the sale, which commences at 10am on Thursday, January 12.
