What a Trade for Spring Calving Grazing Cows at Sedgemoor Auction Centre!

May 2022

The dispersal sale of J W Finding (Farms) Ltd’s 406 Spring Calving LIC Bred Dairy Cows at Sedgemoor Auction Centre generated a great deal of interest for this out wintered, once a day milked herd with volume buyers from Cornwall to Welshpool and Shropshire making the most of the opportunity to secure these hardy cows.

The herd was removed from Clandon Farm Dorchester Dorset to Sedgemoor for convenience of sale and a great team effort enabled all 406 cows forward to be sold in just 5 hours.  The sale started with dairy equipment to include the 24,000L bulk tank selling for £12500.  This was followed by the three 2019 born Hereford bulls which realised 1800gns, 1780gns and 1700gns.  The herd had all calved between February and May with a number served again and contained no less the 170 cows in their 6th to 13th lactations demonstrating the longevity of breeding on the farm.

Cows topped at 1800gns for the March 3rd calver by Busy Brook Robust.  February 2nd calvers by Horizon Blazer ET 1700gns with 6th calvers by Kalmore Hero Earnie at 1680gns x 2.  These smaller framed compact cows did not show their ages with 7th calvers to 1500gns x 2, 8th calvers to 1280gns and 9th lactations Jersey x at 1320gns.  Even three quartered older cows met a good trade with those in their 10 lactations selling for 1050gns.  Calved heifers that had been out wintered and calved in a 2 year of age sold to 1550gns x 5.

The trade carried from start to finish to produce an impressive average of £1271 for all 406 cows sold to include all faults – what a trade!
