300 Organic Crossbred Milkers to Start the Year at Sedgemoor

The decision of WGF & DW Hunt Limited of South Brent Devon to cease milk production offered milk producers a rare opportunity to purchase over 300 organic x bred cows and heifers at Sedgemoor Auction Centre’s first Dairy Dispersal of 2022.

National interest resulted in a number of volume buyers from Cornwall to Dorset, Sussex, Wales and Staffordshire as well the counties in between.  The extensively farmed 5,000kg herd calved throughout the year and in line with the current trade the fresh milk was in strongest demand selling to 1800gns x 2 for British Friesian x December calved 2nd and 3rd lactation cows.  With Norwegian Red x 3rd calvers at 1720gns and 4th calvers 1700gns, Fleckvieh x 5th calvers 1700gns as were August 4th and 2nd calvers and July 2nd calvers served again in November.  2 year old Shorthorn calved heifers by a stock bull sold to 1680gns with British Friesian’s at 1450gns.  Shorthorn incalf heifers due to the British Friesian homebred bull sold to 1080gns with Fleckvieh’s to £1020.

The 300 head sold to include all cows and incalf heifers with faults averaged £1120.
