Interest Builds for Furniture at Antiques Sale

September 2022

Collectors with a penchant for attractive and unusual pieces of furniture are in for a treat at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s monthly antiques auction on Thursday, September 15.

Among the items to have caught the eye is an 18th Century miniature oak cabinet. Possibly Welsh, with moulded cornice above a pair of doors with fielded arched panels, opening to a central pigeonhole surrounded by six drawers, on a base fitted with three drawers. It’s a great colour, but missing some pieces of veneer to the base. Originally it would have had feet and now rests partly on the apron. It has a pre-sale estimate of £300-£500.

Another appealing piece is a mahogany occasional table with specimen marble chessboard. It is guided at £300-£500.

There are a number of fine items from a local deceased estate including a large Chinese hardwood altar table in good condition. This is estimated at £200-£300. There is also a smaller altar table, in good condition, included in the sale.

An unusual Edwardian carved mahogany salon chair, has already attracted a good deal of pre-sale interest. In good condition, it has a high back with pierced and carved decoration of swags and scrollwork with musical instruments, upholstered seat, on cabriole supports with lion paw feet.

A Clarice Cliff  'Bizarre’ ware vase decorated in the rare 'Summerhouse' pattern is also attracting pre-sale interest despite a chip to its rim. This is still a very desirable piece from a favoured maker.

The sale at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton, will be on view between 9am and 4pm on Tuesday, September 13, and Wednesday, September 14. The auction starts at 10am on Thursday.

It will be followed on Friday, September 16, by the quarterly collectors sale, which also begins at 10am.
