Vendors Drawn from Around the Country

September 2022

Auctioneers Greenslade Taylor Hunt have established a fine reputation for their quarterly collectors sales, with items of excellent provenance routinely consigned to these events.

The next auction on Friday, September 16, is no exception with a number of returning vendors plus new interest from as far afield as Wales.

This is hardly surprising as the range and calibre of the items on offer at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton, is always a draw.

One of the highlights is a Chinese embroidered silk court or audience robe (chaopao or chaofu) consigned by a returning vendor from Devon.

Late Qing dynasty, with elaborately woven gold five-clawed dragons chasing flaming pearls against a bright blue ground, a broad border of rolling and stylized waves above the hem, sweeping black sleeves, and a pale blue lining, it is an attractive piece, which has already created a pre-sale buzz.

Also of Chinese interest is a collection of three photo albums – around 350 views depicting the country in the early 20th Century.

A collector from Swansea has consigned a live steam model of a GWR King George V locomotive on the recommendation of another satisfied GTH vendor.

The locomotive, in a slightly dusty condition from storage, is a replica of the model, which went on tour in the United States. During that trip a bell was presented and the model replica is also fitted with a similar adornment. The lot also includes a picture of its namesake.

A house clearance near Langport unearthed a Grodnertal dainty painted wood doll from around 1840. It is all hand painted with a charming face.

As ever there is a good selection of postcards including a Taunton collection and others depicting West Somerset.

The sale starts at 10am at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton. It is on view on September 13 and 14, from 9am-4pm and prior to the sale on Friday from 9am.
