A delightful travelling Victorian toiletry box is likely to be one of the highlights at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s next antiques sale on Thursday, November 5, at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton.

Valuer Simon Rayner said: “They turn up all the time, but usually they’re cracked, or missing bits, or a bit plain and boring. This one is absolutely mint, full of bits and pieces and looks as though it has hardly been touched in a century or more, a real time capsule.”

The vendors were originally planning to consign it to the firm’s general sale at Sedgemoor Auction Centre, but when Simon saw it he realised what a special item it was.

“This is a stunning item. It’s a jaw dropper. The box is amazing – the colour inside and pearling looks as it did 150 years ago. The quality is great. Whoever buys it is going to be over the moon.”

The early Victorian box by makers Halstaff and Hannaford, of London, was originally a wedding present. It is in pristine condition – inside are 11 silver mounted jars, which are all intact. There are lift out trays, which reveal Mother of Pearl manicure items. It has a pre-sale guide of £300-£500.

Due to new Covid regulations the sale will be online only and there will be no access to the saleroom for members of the public. Would-be buyers need to register prior to the sale or leave a commission bid or arrange a phone bid with the saleroom. For more details please call 01823 332525.
