Lifelong nurseryman Alan Avery launched the business from a single, empty field in Roughmoor in 1979 while working in the parks department at Taunton. His career in horticultural spans 55 years; he began at the age of 15.
“It’s been a labour of love – hard work, but enjoyable. It’s an absolutely lovely industry to be in,” said Alan’s wife Candy, who shares her husband’s passion for plants.
Averys Garden Centre and Nursery in Silk Mills Road, Taunton, has grown enormously since its fledgling beginnings when Alan used to grow all their own bedding plants.
Now they sell all types of gardening essentials and accessories and grow their own Christmas trees. There is potential for a new owner to expand the business further.
Duncan Brown, Commercial Partner with Greenslade Taylor Hunt, which is overseeing the sale, said: “Over the years the owners have gained an enviable reputation and created a business model that is simple, profitable and sustainable, with opportunities to grow should new owners wish to do so.”
The garden centre occupies a convenient location beside one of the main routes into Taunton and is easily accessible to a wide catchment area and attracts an extensive passing trade.
The sale also includes Kingfishers Reach, the couple’s three-bedroom home. It is separated from the garden centre, providing privacy, and as the name suggests attracts visiting kingfishers to the adjoining river.
The couple owns a stretch of river, which forms the Western boundary of the property. It has a good stock of game fish, including trout, grayling and on occasion salmon.
The attractive site extends to around 2.5 acres, comprising eight polyconstructed greenhouses used for retail sales, another polytunnel houses soils, compost and trellises. There is an outdoor plant and shrub viewing area plus a good-sized car park to the front of the premises.
The property, business and fixtures and fittings are available at a guide price of £525,000. Stock is available separately at valuation.
