Auction provides window on the world

A 19th Century illustrated Atlas was the top lot at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s quarterly collectors’ sale at the Somerset Auction Rooms.

Tallis’s illustrated atlas and modern history of the world edited by Robert Montgomery Martin, dated 1851 London and New York in its original maroon cloth gilt, featured 83 engraved maps. A civil servant Montgomery Martin was a founding member of the Statistical Society of London.

Despite some “wear and tear” it sold for £2,400.

A group of seven medals, including a Distinguished Service Order medal awarded to Captain CC Bell, attracted a good deal of pre-sale interest. The medals sold for £1,300.

Railway memorabilia drew attention. Competitive bidding ensued for a North British Locomotive Company lozenge shaped cast brass cab works plate.

Dated 1960 and numbered 27897 it sold for an impressive £800. The works number 278897 was a British Rail Class 22 “Baby Warship” diesel electric Type 2 locomotive, which entered service in 1960 and was scrapped in 1969.

The allure of railway posters also remains strong and two with local connections performed well at the sale.

A British Railways poster evoking the delights of Burnham-on-Sea – For Leisure And Pleasure Choose … Burnham-on-Sea sold for £320. Another similar poster went for £240.

A Bassett-Lowke British Rail Princess Coronation Class 4-6-2 tender locomotive “Duchess of Montrose in a dark green livery, unboxed, sold for in excess of its guide price at £450.

A selection of banjos sold well at £480, £450 and £400 respectively, while continuing the musical theme a concertina went for £260.

A Jaeger Le Coultre atmos clock exceeded its pre-sale estimate and sold for £350.

The next collectors’ sale and selected antiques takes place at Sedgemoor Auction Centre, Junction 24, North Petherton, on Wednesday, August 27, from 11.30am.
