Charm all the rage at antiques auction

April 2025

A well supported sale in person and online led to a series of fine prices at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s latest antiques auction at the Somerset Salerooms, Sedgemoor Auction Centre.

Posting the highest price was a weighty sovereign and 1774 guinea charm bracelet. This 9ct rose gold piece had seven sovereigns attached dated 1968, 1899, 1903, 1912, 1909, 1966 and 1911, plus a 1774 George III guinea, all mounted in 9ct gold.

Competitive bidding saw an internet bidder emerge victorious with a definitive £4,200 bid.

There were a number of 9ct gold charm bracelets in the sale, which all sold for comfortably in excess of their guide prices, demonstrating the current demand for gold and the power of a saleroom to drive up prices.

A 9ct gold charm bracelet, hallmarked London 2004, with numerous 9ct gold charms attached, sold for £1,250.

Jewellery in general is commanding strong prices as investors look for secure havens in these volatile times.

A Georgian emerald and diamond ring, well viewed before the auction, was bought for £2,200.

A room bidder claimed an 18ct tri-colour gold necklace with graduated textured fringe links for £1,700.

An antique 9ct gold fob chain saw bidding climb to £1,450, while an 18ct gold half hunter pocket watch, with Swiss hallmarks, went for £1,400.

An unusual 18ct gold ram’s head desk seal sold for a pleasing £1,300 and an 18ct tri-colour gold bracelet, was secured for £1,250.

Just behind this was a H Stern necklace and earrings set with an Inca style pendant, which sold for £1,200.

An antique 9ct fob chain with sovereign attached and dated 1915 sold for £1,100.
