Chinese Jar Sells for £4,000 at Antiques Sale

February 2022

Pre-sale interest was converted into fervoured bidding as a large Chinese ovoid jar devoid of its lid, but otherwise in good condition, sold for £4,000 at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s February antiques sale.

Prior to the sale more than 30 interested parties were mulling over the attractions of the jar via the firm’s online catalogue. This translated into fierce competition for ownership of the Chinese piece.

Punchy prices were the order of the day as a Victorian coffee set comfortably soared above its pre-sale estimate and was bought for £2,300.

The Mid Victorian four piece silver coffee set comprised a coffee pot, tea pot, sugar bowl and creamery, fashioned in the Louis style, hallmarked Sheffield 1854. It would benefit from a clean, but despite age related wear and tear, was in good order.

Gold prices are nudging a 20-year high and this was reflected in a series of good prices in the jewellery section.

Of particular note were a gold rope twist chain which sold for £1,500 and a 9ct rose gold double Albert chain fitted with a 9ct gold mounted 9ct gold Winston Churchill in memoriam 1874-1965 medallion and a 9ct Rose gold T bar, medallion which sold for £1,400.

Now is a great time to sell unwanted jewellery. Perhaps you have forgotten treasures in a drawer. Why not free up some space and convert that dust catcher into useful cash?
