Furniture to the Fore

May 2022

This month’s antiques auction at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton, sees a particularly strong furniture section.

Whilst larger, darker items of furniture are still much less coveted then they once were, the market is very buoyant for more desirable items.

On offer in June’s auction are a number of highly decorative and commercial lacquered items of furniture, with Chinoiserie decoration including pairs of armchairs, bureaux and cabinets. There are also a number of shopfitting or haberdashery cabinets, which would be of interest to collectors and dealers, as well as campaign furniture and two banks of drawers, a pretty, cylinder top ladies bureau and country furniture.

One of the star lots is a Flemish cabinet, featuring highly carved decoration of mythical beasts and Atlas caryatids. This has a pre-sale estimate of £400-£600.
“It promises to be one of the best selection of furniture for quite some time,” said Valuer, Simon Rayner.

The sale takes place a week later than usual because of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. It will be held on June 9 from 10am.

Equally desirable ‘retro’ furniture will be on offer in July’s sale of decorative arts and 20th Century Design. Entries are now being invited for this sale, which takes place on Thursday, July 7.
A wealth of items have already been consigned, including Ladderax, G-Plan, Ercol, and Danish furniture, as well as lighting, ceramics, glass and other mid-Century items. For more information please contact the saleroom on 01823 332525 or email
