It pays to be in the room where it happens!

December 2024

The curtain came down with a flourish on the final jewellery, silverware and watches sale at the Somerset Auction Rooms.

On a number of occasions room bidders edged out online competition for the pick of the lots at the Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s high calibre offering.

There was plenty to delight discerning buyers looking for pre-Christmas inspiration among the quality jewellery that went under the hammer.

An 18ct solid gold curb link bracelet with a heart shaped padlock clasp sold for £3,800, while a lot of interest was shown prior to the auction in a heavy 9ct gold charm bracelet. Hallmarked for London, 1975, it featured nine attractive 9ct gold charms. It went to a room bidder for £2,200.

Just behind was an 18ct white gold opal and diamond ring, which had adorned the front of the auction catalogue. This statement piece, set with an Andamooka matrix cabochon opal, estimated 5.2 carats, displaying a good fire pattern colour, sold to a room bid of £2,000.

Rings in general were in hot demand – a 18ct old cut diamond five stone number went to a room bidder for £1,050, while an 18ct diamond and gold ring made £900, and three antique 22ct wedding bands hallmarked for Birmingham sold for £850.

A well viewed 14ct gold chain necklace achieved the same sum and was taken home by a room bidder.

An antique 9ct gold fob chain also sold for £850. A mixed lot of 18ct gold items of jewellery including a bi-colour gold bar brooch, ribbon bar pendant, cufflinks, pear shaped drop earrings, antique gold ring (stone missing) and a necklace with Arabic motif to centre was bought by a room bidder for £950.

Other prices of note included £750 for an 18ct emerald and diamond ring and the same amount for an 18ct gold and old cut diamond ring.

A quantity of 9ct gold items including chain necklaces, tri colour gold herringbone link drop earrings, oval link bracelet and one 8ct gold curb link chain sold for £700.

A 24ct gold 10-gram ingot pendant, which had attracted much pre-sale interest sold for £600 – comfortably above its estimate. This was also the price achieved for an 18ct gold engraved bangle, which went to a room bidder.
