Jewellery shines at antiques sale

June 2024

Gold in all its guises proved a big draw at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s recent jewellery, watches and silver sale at the Somerset Auction Rooms.

Many of the items on offer comfortably exceeded their pre-sale guides as buyers sought the certainty and reliability of gold.

An 18ct gold curb link bracelet broke through the £1,000 barrier to sell for £1,100, while a nine-carat gold charm bracelet comfortably exceeded its pre-sale estimate to achieve £920.

Other gold prices of note included £1,650 for a full Kruggerand pendant set coin, £750 for two pairs of gold cuff links, a nine-carat gold rope link chain necklace made £560 and two gold wedding bands went for £540.

A charming 18ct gold and diamond locket, French hallmarked, with a finely painted portrait of a lady sold for £450.

As expected, an Art Deco sapphire and diamond 18ct white gold plaque ring sold well. It featured old European and Swiss cut diamonds, estimated to total 1.4 carats, and attracted a flurry of pre-sale interest. It sold for £1,800 – the top price of the day.

Generally, women’s watches are not as sought-after as those for men. However, a ladies Rolex, which had garnered a good deal of pre-sale interest, bucked this trend and sold for £950 – again above the pre-sale guide.
