Key works by Czech artist up for auction

March 2024

Greenslade Taylor Hunt have been selected once again to host a special auction of paintings by the popular Czech artist Ernest Neuschul (1895-1968). Following the sell-out success of a similar sale in 2018 a further group of 40 artworks have been consigned by the artist’s family for stand-alone event at the firm’s North Petherton saleroom on Thursday, March 27.

“These paintings are all fresh to the market, with an outstanding provenance, and many have not been seen before,” explained Peter Rixon, the firm’s picture valuer.

They encompass expressionist portraits and other studies, some in an abstract style, and date from the 1940s through to the 1960s.

Neuschul was a leading figure of the German art scene in the decades preceding the Second World War but his choice of socially-aware subject matter and his anti-Fascist political views made him a target of the Nazi regime which condemned his work as ‘degenerate’.

He fled Prague on the last train permitted to leave, settling in South Wales and, subsequently, London.

“In the wake of major retrospective exhibitions in 1989 and 2001, Neuschul has re-emerged from the shadows and his star is now very much in the ascendancy,” added Dr Rixon.
