Lively Set Of Prices At August Antiques Sale
August 2023
August is traditionally a quiet month in the antiques sales calendar – but not at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s recent auction.
Prices across the board were pleasingly robust for vendors at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton.
Pick of the pack were a pair of George III style mahogany framed sofas. These had been keenly viewed prior to the auction and this translated into fierce competition for ownership on sale day. They were bought for £13,300 – top price of the day.
A charming Indian School picture of a Mughal prince before a palace was another crowd pleaser and also adorned the front of the catalogue. This had generated much pre-sale interest with 29 people watching it via the online platform.
Room, phone and internet bidders all battled for possession and it was secured for £8,400.
Other prices of note included £3,100 for a large pair of Chinese ginger jars and a monogrammed Myles Birket Foster (1825-1899) watercolour of Cattle Droving before the Church went for £2,000.
Of local interest was an antique sapphire and diamond set bracelet which had been presented to the Mayoress of Tiverton, (1898-99) Mrs J. Thorne by her many friends. With its original fitted leather case it made £1,100.
Two oil on boards by Joan Glichrest found separate homes – Enjoying St Ives and the appropriately titled, given the recent weather, Rainy Day each made £1,300.
A more “wallet friendly” large rustic farmhouse kitchen table, went for £220, while a collection of 23 Zippo lighters sold for £320.
Preparations are in hand for the next antiques sale, which will take place on Thursday, September 14. It will be followed at 2pm by a dedicated collectors’ sale.
