Gold prices rocket 20% in a year

If you are looking to boost your coffers as the twin demands of the cost-of-living crisis and Christmas loom you might find an answer closer than you might imagine.

As countless radio adverts keep repeating the price of gold has gone galactic. This is not mere marketing hype. Prices for the precious metal have increased more than 20% this year, breaking a succession of records.

This global phenomenon played at in real time at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s most recent jewellery, silverware and watches auction at the Somerset Sale Rooms, Sedgemoor Auction Centre, North Petherton.

An 18ct gold charm bracelet, easily exceeded its pre-sale estimate and sold for £1,150. This double curb link chain with various 9ct, 14ct, and 18ct gold charms attached was an appealing piece.

However, it’s not just “best in show” items that are grabbing attention and cash. An assortment of 9ct gold chains – necklaces and a bracelet, mostly broken – were snapped up for £750.


An 18ct gold ruby and diamond bracelet, with one ruby missing, sold for £660.

A 9ct gold ingot pendant and a selection of rings – a gent’s signet ring and another embossed with a St Christopher and a ladies floral and heart motif ring – went for £540.

Appropriately with the party season approaching a ladies 9ct gold Rotary cocktail watch was sold for £760.

Continuing the timepiece theme an Asprey 18ct gold Art Deco pocket watch made £680.

There had been much pre-sale interest in an Art Nouveau silver and enamel trinket box. This tiny item – standing 4cm tall, with one slightly bent foot, featured a hinged lid decorated in iridescent blue and green enamel in flowing Art Nouveau design. Hallmarked Birmingham 1907 it sold for £320.
