Stylish Design Is Always In Fashion - Just Ask Elton

July 2023

Salegoers were treated to an eclectic mix of chic delights at Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s recent antiques sale at The Octagon Salerooms, East Reach, Taunton, including a ring that previously belonged to pop superstar Elton John.

“Antiques” is a bit of a misnomer where the July sale was concerned as the star lot was a beautiful three stone 2.2 carat diamond ring hallmarked in London in 1997. It was bought for £3,050.

Further “stardust” was added to proceedings by the ring purported to have belonged to Elton John and designed by his favoured jeweller Theo Fennell.

The handmade sapphire bombe ring was given to the vendor by Elton personally. The 18ct yellow gold with rhodium plating to centre of the band, featured a dark blue sapphire, flanked by trilliant cut, citrines. It was bought for £1,500.

The sale also featured a significant section of 20th Century design items. Among these was a limited-edition screen print, signed in pencil by abstract artist Sir Terry Frost RA (1915-2003). The Five Black Moons piece dated ’99 was bought for £2,580.

Furniture also found favour in the sale with no fewer than 30 people watching a “TOGO” red leather Italian sofa prior to the sale.

This translated into competitive bidding at the auction, with the piece by Michel Ducaroy for Ligne Roset, selling for £850 – comfortably above its pre-sale guide. A smart 1960s Danish teak dining room suite also proved appealing and made £1,600.

The saleroom is a great hunting ground for unusual items you won’t find on the High Street and often at prices that might surprise you for such unique pieces.

The next sale takes place on August 3 from 10am. For more information, please call the salerooms on 01823 332525.
