Autumn Gold Collective Dairy Sale

October 2023

Despite further cuts to the milk price for October, fresh milk trade remained strong for the annual Autumn Gold Sale with regular vendors FH Chave & Son topping the day with the calved heifer Peacehay Ligthouse Dancer backed by 9 generations of VG & Ex at £2415. She was closely followed by commercial cows from RC & JL Pickering & Sons at £2331 and Longmoor Farm Ltd’s Longmoor Fynn Sunset 3rd at £2257.50 both second calvers.

No less than 30 milkers sold for in excess of £2,000 including Peacehay x 7, RC & JL Pickering & Sons x 7, Moorshard x 5, Longmoor x 4, Newmead x 2, Huntlodge, Beneknowle, Dorset and MWJ & SJ Gould. This reflected the demand for the best quality on offer, second quality milkers and spring calvers met a much more selected trade.

The continued Dispersal of the ‘Tarischka’ Herd on behalf of Hawkins Farm Partnership once again topped the incalf heifer section at £1942.50 x 2 with Tarischka Porter Coral and Tarischka Allegro May 2nd due to Holstein (sexed) at the end of October.

Another continued Dispersal for ‘Farmestate’ herd for FE Hill & Sons sold to £1680 for Farmestate Agronaut Duchess due to Holstein (sexed) at the end of November and Farmestate Aladdinred Blue due December.

A brighter bulling heifer trade saw well-bred well grown heifers selling to £892.50 x 2 for the University of Reading with Whitenights Invictus Anthea and Whitenights Atrium Bridie.

Viking Red Crossbred Yearlings sold to £483 x 4 for Trent Manor Farms with two week old heifer calves for the same vendor to £231.

Another bumper entry of Holstein calves produced a slight easier trade on the day selling to £462 x 2 for calves sired by Winstar Mendel P and Knighton for JF Cobb & Sons.

The convenient location of Sedgemoor Auction Centre attracted over 29 successful purchasers on the day from Dartmouth to Northern Ireland and volume buyers from Worcester, Wiltshire and Kent as well as a strong local support with buyers both in the ring and online creating the following creditable averages.
