Basic, Better, Best – Brilliant Bank Notes

Join us in exploring a range of Great British bank notes which have been sold at The Somerset Auction Rooms. We will be comparing and contrasting these bank notes in order to decipher which ones have the highest, lowest and medium price tags. 

Our experts have provided four items for consideration. The prices for the items range from a budget-friendly £25 and £120 to the most expensive at £2,800, with the medium-range item fetching £1,400.

Useful indicators to consider when assessing the items are the age, condition, rarity, quantity and whether there are any unique features. These can all help in reaching a decision on the quality and value of any item.

1. George V (1910-1936), Five Pound Note
An old five pound bank note in poor condition

This five pound note has been framed and was issued on 8th September 1919 from the Bristol branch under the Chief Cashier E. Harvey, bearing the number T25 81927. 

2. George V (1910-1936), Treasury Note, One Pound 
An old one pound bank note in poor condition
Another framed note, which is a third issue circa 1923 under the Secretary to the Treasury John Bradbury, bearing the number A98 718560. 

3. George V (1910-1936), Five Pound Note
An old five pound bank note in excellent condition
A white five pound note in good condition, issued on 21st May 1926 from the Bristol branch under the Chief Cashier C.P Mahon, bearing the number 309U 59922. Together with six assorted ten shillings notes; and a one pound note.
 
4. Ten Pound Bank Notes
A collection of nine, old, ten pound bank notes
A collection of nine, £10 bank notes which are all in generally good condition. Issued under Chief Cashier J.B Page and two of which feature consecutive numbering B75 504418-504419.
