“Egg-cellent” success at Sedgemoor property sale

October 2025

Greenslade Taylor Hunt held yet another successful auction, in its new location at Sedgemoor Auction Centre, Junction 24, North Petherton, where over 70 people were registered to bid in the room, with many more online.

The day saw a total of 29 lots go under the hammer, with a number of properties having been sold prior to the auction.

The auctioneers were delighted with the bumper entry of lots achieving excellent results.

The most notable sale of the day was the 1.74 acres of land at Edmund Hill Lane, Glastonbury, which saw hugely competitive bidding and eventually sold for over three times the guide price, at £217,000 – equating to £124,713 per acre.

This site comprised a range of agricultural and poultry buildings situated at the end of Edmund Hill Lane. The buildings have potential for conversion to alternative uses, subject to obtaining the necessary statutory consents. The land, situated to the rear of the agricultural buildings, comprised a single cider apple orchard.

Another 10 lots on Edmund Hill Lane were offered for sale, with all of them selling for significantly over their guide prices, attracting a large number of bidders in the room as well as over 40 people registered to bid online.

Among these fiercely contested lots was an orchard that belonged to Glastonbury farmer, Wilfred Peddle, who passed away earlier this year aged 74. He was affectionately known as the “Egg Man” as he made a living selling eggs from the back of his Morris Minor van.

The Friends of St Edmund's Well wanted to purchase the space to preserve the orchards. The community interest group (CIC) paid £62,000 for the land, having raised the money as part of a crowdfunding effort.

Other prices of note included a small parcel of woodland in Yeovil Marsh, guided at £4,000 which sold for £14,000, with some very keen bidding in the auction room.

The auction market in the South West region has seen a ‘significant annual uplift’, with sales increasing by 15% in August, the latest data from Essential Information Group (EIG) has revealed, reflecting strong interest and buyer engagement, making it a great time to sell your property or land at auction.

GTH’s next property auction is on Wednesday, October 22, at the Aldwick Estate, Redhill.

Entries are invited for the November sale when the auctioneers will return to Sedgemoor Auction Centre. This auction will take place on Wednesday, November 19.
