Quality, Rarity and Provenance Drive Success at Selected Antiques Sale

The right antiques continue to attract strong competition in the saleroom, with a host of impressive prices achieved at our new Selected Antiques Sale.

Collectors, dealers and private buyers were all active throughout the auction, demonstrating that quality, rarity and provenance remain the key ingredients when it comes to achieving standout results.

Among the highlights was a 19th century gilt brass carriage clock signed J.F. Cole / London. The clock was distinguished not only by its elaborate engraved decoration but also by a historical inscription recording its presentation to Algernon Peel by Earl Cadogan in recognition of his service as Private Secretary between 1885 and 1899. With bidding gathering pace, the clock eventually sold for £5,600.

Fine art also performed strongly. A signed colour print of 'Berwick-upon-Tweed' by celebrated British artist L.S. Lowry attracted considerable interest before selling for £7,800, making it one of the leading lots of the day.

Another notable result came in the form of a charming painting by Andrew Beer, renowned for depicting racing pigeons. The work, which celebrated the achievements of its prize-winning subject and owner, sold for £4,000.

The sale also demonstrated the continuing appeal of decorative works with strong stories behind them. A late 19th century Welsh pair of stained wood love spoons, carved by a sailor for his Pembrokeshire sweetheart and preserved through family descent, captured bidders' imaginations and achieved £1,400.

Furniture buyers were equally active. A substantial 16th century and later elm and oak coffer with deeply carved Gothic tracery sold for £1,300, while a Mouseman oak monk's chair from the workshop of Robert Thompson of Kilburn, complete with the famous carved mouse trademark, realised £1,000.

Interest in Asian works of art also remained encouraging, with a pair of Chinese blue and white baluster vases decorated with peony flowers attracting competition before selling for £1,000.

These results underline the strength of the market for well-presented and interesting antiques, particularly where quality craftsmanship, historical associations and clear provenance come together.
