A Cracking Ayrshire Topped the Christmas Cracker at SAC
The Christmas Cracker Sale & Show at Sedgemoor Auction Centre saw no less than 52 selling in excess of £2000, to a top of £3255 for Nicky and Chris Lockyer’s much admired pedigree Ayrshire, Crayola Buster Denim (VG85). The successful purchaser was JB & I Mclean from Northern Ireland. Her month old daughter, Crayola Hawaiian Denim 2 went on to sell for £945 in our Online Christmas Spotlight Sale the same evening.
The Christmas Cracker combines our annual show which this year was judged by Jane Targett of the Carrymoor Herd. Her task was no mean feat with over 150 fresh calved cows and heifers to choose from. It was her Champion who topped the Holsteins for RD Horton & Son’s with their second lactation Hinton Cosmont Sara (VG85, SP) selling for £2782.50 with others from the same vendor at £2520 for Hinton Casper Zita (GP84, SP) and Hinton Delta-Lambda Gypsy Grand (GP83).
The continued Dinnaton Dispersal from Derek & Jeremy Dennis topped the calved heifers at £2520 with Dinnaton Galaxy Calumet Dainty and Dinnaton Jetstream Lambda Dainty, alongside Geoff Morgan’s Littleweir Arvis Boo 4th, also selling at £2520.
Trade of the day went to the continued Tomson dispersal from M Hooper & Sons Ltd, whose incalf heifers due January, sold to £2257.50 for Tomson Mambo Charmian 51st 1st prize in the youngstock class and Tomson Clove Comet 55th. The 13 heifers entered averaged an impressive £1795.50.
A small number of calves forward sold to £861 for Wiltor Chief Glenda from David, Claire and Matt Jones, Monmouth.
The only bull of the day Clevian Million off the Ciderhouse Fleur family from Andy Limond sold for £2100.
In line with trade throughout the UK, freshly calved cows and strong heifers giving over 30kg continued to attract excellent demand despite the inclement weather conditions, whereas all other types met a very selective trade.
An exceptional entry of fresh milk gave purchasers an excellent choice with buyers from Northern Ireland to Carmarthen, both in the market and online creating the following credible averages:
