Christmas Cracker Ignited The Dairy Trade of All Ages
The recent weather did not dampen Sedgemoor Auction Centre’s Annual Christmas Cracker Show & Sale with circa half of the milkers selling for in excess of £2,000.
The Christmas Cracker includes our annual show which this year was judged by John Colclough from Cheshire. It was the Reserve Champion and First Prize Heifer that topped the day for FH Chave & Son for the third month running at £2,677 with Peacehay Jordy Rachel, a heifer backed by an impressive 12 generations of straight excellent.
Closely followed by the Champion and First Prize Cow, Clenchers Nihao Corrine VG85, SP consigned by Rea & Son at £2,625 with others from the same vendor at £2,572.50 for November calved heifer, Clenchers System Flora.
Other vendors who sold milking cows & heifers for over £2,000 included DC Dennis & Son, DW & CE Jones, PC Pocock & Co, TC Cox, RK & SG Miller & Sons, Lilylane Farms and MKJ Reed & Son.
The incalf heifer section topped at £1,629 x 2 for the final consignment from the continued Dispersal of the ‘Tarischka’ Herd on behalf of Hawkins Farm Partnership with Tarischka Porter Lucky 2nd, due to Cedarwal Revolve (sexed) at the end of January and the ‘Farmestate’ Herd on behalf of FE Hill & Sons with Farmestate Dynamite Beauty 2nd due to Aberdeen Angus in February, Second Prize Winner of the Youngstock Class.
The ‘Lynchmead’ Herd on behalf of D & A Mead & Co topped the bulling heifer section at £1,050 with Lynchmead Santos Whitetime 2nd, a classy heifer backed by an impressive 11 generations of VG and Ex, going back to the Dowervale Herd. Followed by the University of Reading at £945 x 2 for Whitenights Sumerian Althea and Whitenights Newman Ginger with PLIs of £373 and £456 respectively.
Yearlings sold to £819 x 2 for the Youngstock Dispersal of the ‘Blackenfield’ Herd on behalf of S & H Persey Ltd, following the private sale of the milking proportion of the herd, with calves selling to £630 x 2 for Rea & Son with Brown Swiss X’s.
In line with recent trade throughout the UK, the best prices were achieved by high yielding, stronger types, however there was a marked improvement in the trade for all followers exceeding expectations!
A larger entry compared to November, with 220 forward, drew 35 buyers from the South West to Cheshire and across to Abergavenny creating the following credible averages:
