Flying Herd Dispersal defies Milk Price Pressures
December 2025
The Dispersal Sale for Thornhill Fm Dorset Ltd held at Sedgemoor Auction Centre drew a good crowd around the ring with volume buyers from the north and cattle travelling to Cornwall and Mongomery as well as many Counties in between.
The reputation of the Selway family always buying good cattle held them in good stead when they decided to disperse their flying herd. Despite the industry concerns over milk price, fodder and falling barren cow demand the quality of the cows on offer shone through with those present and on marteye making the most of the opportunity to secure quality cattle.
Topping the day was the commercial fresh 2nd calver with no records or breeding behind her who sold for £3255. Just under £3k at £2992.50 was the August calved heifer by Peak Altagaines ET giving 38.9kgs. All selling for £2940 were the Sep 4th calver Riverbride Tenday Regis giving 38.7kgs, the 3rd calver Hadlow Impression Gina giving 41.9kgs and the May calved first lactation Boghill Glamour Santos daughter giving 39.6kgs and served again in October. With 25 successful purchasers on the day to include those new to Sedgemoor from out of the area and strong Devon, Dorset & Somerset support the all year around calving herd achieved an impressive £2016.54 average (excluding cows with faults).
