Hampshire Holsteins Disperse on a £3,990 High at Sedgemoor Auction Centre

Despite the challenges brought about by the recent change in the Blue Tongue Zone the 180 head that made it to Sedgemoor Auction Centre for the February Collective Sale were rewarded with an excellent trade for the very good quality on offer in all sections.

The depleted fresh milk section due to the new Blue Tongue Restriction Zone topped at £3045 x 2 for regular consigners, Rea & Son with 2 second calvers from their Clenchers herd’s Anemonelass and Star families. Another regular consigner topped the calved heifer section at £2835 for Peacehay Fitz Rochelle 13th from F H Chave & Son.

Hislop & Son continued their dispersal with a further 11 cows and heifers which sold to £2730 for their commercial 2nd calver by Mr Wings Norton.

The highlight of the day was the ‘Beauworthy’ dispersal on behalf of Hampshire Holsteins Ltd. In many respects it was a sad day to see someone who is obviously such a naturally talented young stockman as Ryan House having to sell his herd. The cows were a credit to him and even though they had calved last summer/autumn their quality saw them sell to £3,990 for the 2nd calver Gladwake Rubicon Primrose 3rd bred by Joe Ives, she had calved last August and was served again.

Another August calver this time a heifer being Beauworthy Caths Rozline Galaxy sold for £3,360. The October 4th calver Oakworthy Elsas Platinum Princess VG86 sold for £3,255, as did the 3rd calver Gladwake Capital Henja 3rd. The July calved second calver Beauworthy Treelea Renegade Daphne VG85 sold for £3,150 with a further 4 selling for over £3,000.

The 25 incalf heifers forward averaged £1,786 for heifers calving March to June. JA Selway Ltd topped this section at £2121 for Lyegrove Rerude Roase due April to Hereford. At £2,100 was Laram Redcarpet Bambi due March from RA & DA Plowright. Well-bred bulling heifers to £1,575 for Thornforge Rolex Eclipse and £1,470 for Thornforge Rager Raven from Beth Ward of Holsworthy.

The day started with fresh commercial heifer calves from Gorvin Farming of Bideford, Devon which topped at £357.50 x2.

A day which produced 11 over £3,000, 25 over £2,800 with buyers from Cornwall to Cheshire and down to West Wales generated the following excellent averages:

Calved Cows £2.570.59
Calved Heifers £2,533.13 (including three quartered at £2,100)
Incalf Heifers £1,786
Bulling Heifers £1,144.50
Heifer Calves £263.20

Dispersals
11 Head – Hislop & Sons £2,202
97 Head – Hampshire Holsteins Ltd £2,239 (including all faults)
