Scorching Fresh Milk Trade at SAC Winter Warmer

January 2023

The heat of the fresh milk trade with 23 cows and heifers selling for over £2500 kept everyone warm at the Sedgemoor Winter Warmer Collective Dairy Sale which started the New Year in style. Producers made the most of the quality milk on offer which was a credit to our vendors and produced a record fresh milk average for these sales.

Long standing consigners FH Chave & Son (Wellington), DC Dennis & Son Ltd (Ivybridge) and Dimond Farming Ltd (Sherborne) all shared the sales leading price of £2835 with the second calver Peacehay Fortune Rachel 5th topping the cows and Dinnaton Currency Daliance Roxy and Dorset Luster Bride the calved heifers.

MKJ Reed & Son (Cullompton) sold their second calver Beaconhill Doorman Jackie for £2730, regular consigners Rea & Son (Ledbury) also achieved £2730 an impressive three times with second calvers Clenchers Montoya Bounty (VG85, SP) and Clenchers Montoya Stocking (SP) and their calved heifer Clenchers Luster Elsie with all six consigned averaging an impressive £2581. First time consigners included AW Frampton & Son (Owermoigne, Dorset) who experienced a flying trade topping at £2677.50 and averaging £2350 overall for their 12 commercial homebred cows and heifers and the Crimp Family from (Ivybridge, Devon) who sold quality milkers from the Tuffland Herd that had calved in August for 2100gns.

Milk was very much the trade of the day with fresh cows in particular being in demand.  Incalf heifers were easier on the day compared to last month with heifers due Feb selling to £1629 for NJ & RS Hector and £1627.50 for LK ML & GJ Williams, whilst commercial yearlings sold to £546 x 3 for J & D Tilbee.

An excellent choice of calves topped at £735 for MJ & JE Wade’s Loford Robin Twinkle, a July born calf bred from the famous Miss Pottsdale Dfi Tang Red (Ex94). JF Cobb & Sons were back with four September born calves selling for £525.

A day when the milk trade defied the recent concerns over milk price cuts saw successful purchasers both local and from further afield (a significant number of which made use of Marteye online bidding) produce the following impressive averages:
Fresh Calved Cows   £2527.00
Fresh Calved Heifers  £2335.00
Incalf Heifers      £1223.00
Yearlings  £462.00
Heifer Calves £385.00
