The shortage of genuine dispersal sales fires up the trade
July 2024
Steve and Jenny Curtis commercial herd of Holstein Friesians and Fleckviehs attracted considerable interest from across England and Wales for a NMR grazed herd, calving all year around. Fresh milk dominated the trade, selling for £2520 for a much admired 2nd calver, calved in April and giving 36.2 kgs daily, at 5.45% butterfat, others to £2415 for another 2nd calver, £2362.50 for a 34.6 kgs 4th calver recently calved. The first cow in the ring was a Fleckvieh X 2nd calver, giving 36.8 kgs that realised £2310. March calvers served again sold to £2100. Autumn calvers sold to £2205 for a first calved heifer, with others to £2152.50.
A very respectable overall average of £1675 reflected the quality of the cattle on offer and rewarded the family for their commitment to dairy farming over many years with Mrs Curtis personally milking the herd.
The final dispersal of the day was the non-recorded British Friesian herd from D & SG Dicker of Coombe Farm, Swanage. This close herd with no milk weighing’s generated a strong demand selling to £1995 for the fresh 2nd calver by Lakemead Jingle with others at £1942.50 x2 for another Jingle this time an April calved heifer and a May 2nd calver by Deangate Quaich. A good trade across the board held for the older cows with 5th+ calvers constantly at £1260+.
All the 84 cows & heifers sold on the day to include faults and off lying cows averaged an impressive £1422.
