Sherborne – simply the best place to live

March 2024

The beautiful historic town of Sherborne has been named the best place to live in the South West according to a national newspaper.

A panel of judges rated a variety of factors which give Sherborne the wow factor over other West Country locations.

Richard Stubbert, Residential Manager at GTH’s Sherborne branch, certainly understands the town’s appeal. He was raised and educated in Sherborne and is now bringing up his young family here.

He said: “It’s a great community with a good mix of state and private schools, which are all well regarded.”

Simon Havens, Partner and Head of Residential Sales, also noted in a televised interview with BBC Points West: “Homes are snapped up quickly here. It’s a very busy market. The town and its sense of community appeals to all ages from young families to those retiring from London and the South East.”

One of the big attractions is undoubtedly its great educational offering. Richard’s children, George, eight, and Flo, seven, attend Sherborne Primary School. According to its most recent Ofsted report: “Parents are overwhelmingly positive about the academic and pastoral provision provided.”

Education is certainly a driver for buyers looking to settle in the town. Newly launched to the market by GTH is Aird House. This elegant 1930s home is generously proportioned and just a short stroll from the town centre. The vendors moved to Sherborne for its excellent scholastic offering, and now with their children heading to university they are moving on.

The town’s vibrant shopping scene is home to a plethora of independent traders, a long-standing, butchers as well as national chains, making Sherborne top of many a house hunter’s list.

The Sunday Times noted the town’s well-connected location – with a main train line to London – as a major draw. It is only 40 minutes from the coast, while Bristol and Bath are an hour away.

The honey-coloured buildings contribute to its appeal along with its rich cultural scene – the town boasts two castles and an abbey.

Sherborne House is the newest addition to the arts scene. Meticulously renovated this high-end arts and exhibition centre will open officially later this Spring.
