Adam Celebrates 30 Years with GTH

March 2022

A childhood passion for cattle has inspired a long-held career in agriculture for Fieldsman Adam Hayes who celebrates 30 years with Greenslade Taylor Hunt this month.
“What inspired me was going to Taunton Market with my Dad from the age of eight, running the sheets from the three sale rings (store cattle, barren cows and the dairy cattle) to the office.

“There every transaction was hand written into a 'bill book' and that's how the invoices were done,” said Adam.

He followed in his father’s footsteps. His Dad, Brian, worked at WRJ Greenslade & Co, Greenslade Taylor Hunt’s predecessor firm for 43 years until his retirement.

“When I was 16, John Titman, auctioneer and chartered surveyor, took me under his wing and took me to farms to source cattle for the prime stock markets and 38 years later I am still visiting some of the same farms,“ said Adam.

His role involves growing the livestock side of the firm and supporting farmers on farm with selection of their stock for market.

“The best things about my job are that no two days are the same. When not in market I can be on farms as far down as St Ives or over to Gloucester so covering all the South West counties.

“I have met some real characters over this time and many have become very close friends,” said Adam.

He is joint treasurer and secretary of the South West Winter Fair which this year celebrates its 16th anniversary. It will take place at Sedgemoor Auction Centre, on Monday, December 5.

Adam organises the trade stands and sponsorship at the event and the awards dinner, which can attract up to 250 people.

Robert Venner, Partner in charge of Sedgemoor Market said: "Adam is a vital member of our market team. The "market day" may start days or weeks in advance with a visit on farm by Adam. Adam's commitment to his clients and skill involved with selecting stock for market when they are at their best is greatly valued by his clients and us as auctioneers.

“Adam is a team leader on market days and ensures stock are booked in correctly and that the droving teams are providing the best service for our vendors and buyers alike. Adam's dedication to the firm over the last 30 years has been exemplary and I personally look forward to working with him for several years to come. Who knows, we could see the 40 years milestone."

In his spare time Adam enjoys playing football and is a fair weather cyclist. He and his family, wife, Paula and children, Savannah and Piers love visiting the coast.

Adam also watches his son, Piers play football at weekends.

Things have moved full circle and Piers,14, had his first stint helping out at the market last week.
