Erection of up to 46 dwellings at Castle Cary

At a glance

  • Proposal to deliver 46 new homes in an area with a significant undersupply
  • Planning permission granted at appeal after two deferrals and refusal
The Brief

The GTH Planning team were instructed to prepare an outline planning application for the erection of up to 46 dwellings with associated access, open space and landscaping at Castle Cary. The proposal provides a much needed boost to the housing stock of South Somerset and included the provision of up to 17 affordable homes.

The Result

The proposal was recommended for approval by Somerset Council Officers. However, that recommendation was overturned by Members of the Planning Committee who ultimately voted to refuse it on spurious grounds, contrary to the Officer’s recommendation.

The GTH team were subsequently instructed to prepare and manage the appeal process. Following a hearing the appeal was allowed and planning permission was granted.

The GTH Planning team were involved with the pre-application enquiry, the planning application and the appeal process. This highlights the breadth of experience and depth of service that GTH offer in working with clients, consultants and the Council.
