The Brief

The Grade II listed Tithe Barn dates back to the 16th/17th century and over the years has undergone a series of additions. The roof covering was in a very poor state of repair and was in urgent need of restoration. The GTH Architectural team was commissioned by the East Quantoxhead Estate to manage the restoration of the roof.

The work was supported by a Funding in Protected Landscapes (FIPL) Grant through the Quantock Hills National Landscape with the work undertaken by Quantock Builders.

The Result

The work consisted of the stripping of the roof coverings and the repair of the structure and re-roofing. The pan tiles from the lower roofs were salvaged and reused with new slates being laid on the principal roof. The works were completed with the re-thatching of part of the roof.

The GTH Architectural team secured Listed Building Consent for the works and then prepared a tender package and administered the building contract.

This work emphasises the knowledge and experience of the GTH Architectural team and has helped to secure the sympathetic and lasting restoration of a historically significant building.
