Opportunities in Rural Surveying – ‘The Clarkson Effect’

October 2025

In this job no two days are alike, and that’s part of the appeal. One morning may involve walking land to inspect field boundaries or negotiating a rent review with a tenant and the afternoon could be spent drafting a valuation report for inheritance tax.

There are many routes to enter the Rural Surveying sector, and at Greenslade Taylor Hunt we strongly believe in the need to invest in our Graduates and Undergraduates across all disciplines that the firm offers.

We also offer a Rural Surveying Apprenticeship for those finishing full time education and looking for an alternative to university. It is a five-year course which is delivered by Harper Adams, blending study with practical training.

It’s being reported across professional bodies including the Central Association of Agricultural Valuers and agricultural universities alike that there has been an increase in students enrolling on land management courses in recent years and is being dubbed as part of ‘the Clarkson effect’ with ‘Cheerful Charlie’ inspiring a rise in applications at these institutions.

At a time where the countryside is constantly changing, shifts in land use, policy and environmental pressures, renewable energy developments and the growing importance of sustainable farming means that the expertise of rural surveyors has never been more vital.

For those with an interest in land, property and the environment, careers in this sector offer a diverse and rewarding path.
